Who Is Alysa Liu Dating? Inside Olympic Gold Medal Winner's Love Life

Team USA figure skater Alysa Liu is having a moment following her two gold medal wins at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina, Italy.

The skater has become a pop culture phenomenon as one-third of Team USA Figure Skating’s “Blade Angels” alongside Amber Glenn and Isabeau Levito. Alysa’s trademark striped hair and frenulum piercing have also made her one of the 2026 Winter Olympics’ undisputed style icons.

With her grueling training schedule and skyrocketing media profile, it’s no surprise that Liu has put dating on ice for now.

“Right now, I choose friendships over relationships any day,” she told Cosmopolitan in January 2026.

The figure skater clarified that she was not looking for a romantic relationship because she was already being supported by friends and family.

“I have so much love in my life already, and I have so many amazing people, I just haven’t felt the need to look for more or look elsewhere,” she noted. “I really love myself. And my standards are quite high, too.”

What Has Alysa Liu Said About Dating?

Alysa Liu may be happily single at the moment but she hasn’t given up on finding love in the future. Speaking to Cosmopolitan, Liu said she was hopeful of eventually meeting someone who can keep up with her fast-paced lifestyle of intense physical training and competing across the globe.

“My schedule, especially since starting to skate again, is pretty hectic. If I were to date someone, we’d each have to make tons of sacrifices,” she pointed out.

Liu went on, “It’s just not worth it at this point to build something. I think when it comes, it will. I love being single, I really do. I do see myself being single for a long time. Especially right now, I choose friendships over relationships any day.”

What Does Alysa Liu Do When She’s Not Skating?

Alysa Liu had the unique opportunity to learn more about herself and develop new passions when she temporarily retired from figure skating at age 16 in 2022.

“I just had so much free time, and I could explore other things in my daily life. Just because I didn’t have skating, workouts, or competitions. I went to a lot of concerts, discovered a lot of new music,” she told In The Loop in 2024. “And bought a lot of clothes because before I really only needed skating clothes because I skated every day and that’s all I did. It’s a really big difference, night and day, from when I was skating before and from when I took a break.”

Liu reflected on having the chance to really focus on “school, vacation, skiing, try[ing] other sports [and hanging] out with my friends and family” during her two years away from the ice.

“I took a lot of advantage over summertime because everyone is free. And when I was a skater, summer, it’s not, you’re not free at all,” she acknowledged. “In fact, you train more in the summer. That was a really nice surprise for me because I realized that I could hang out with my friends and family every day for hours on end. I watched a lot of movies. I went to the beach a lot, picked up a ton of new hobbies, tried new food, just went out into the world. I didn’t have a routine. I just did whatever.”

However, Liu ultimately chose to return to skating in early 2024 because the sport tied so many of her interests together.

“I got into other things, like fashion, but I never went to the gym. Skating gave me something to be strong for. I love having willpower,” she told Cosmopolitan. “I used to never care about programs, what you skated to, your dresses, stuff like that. Now, I love skating dresses and helping with the design process. This sport is kind of an outlet for me. I love dance and music, so it’s everything in one.”

The athlete’s interest in fashion is most evident in her signature striped hairstyle, which she designed to look the the inside of a tree trunk.

“I just wanted to be a tree,” Liu explained to Paralympian Haven Shepherd in a February 2026 interview. “Three years ago, I put my first [bleached halo] and I thought, ‘Oh, next year, wintertime … I’m going to do the second one,’ so I did.”

Liu now adds a new stripe at the end of each year. Once she returned to the ice, Liu struck a deal with her coaches so she could control her own style and presentation.

“No one tells me what I’m gonna wear. No one tells me how my hair is gonna be. No one’s gonna try to change me,” she told Cosmopolitan. “I’m going to pick my own programs and skate the sessions I want to skate. Y’all are my coaches. You guys are going to help me and lead me in training, but I’m structuring it the way I want to.”

She went on, “[Coaches] mentioned some judges and higher-ups might be concerned. I said if they tell me to dye my hair back, I will quit. If they don’t like it and they want to give me less scores or treat me differently, that’s on them. If I change my hair, it’s gonna be because I wanted to.”

Liu also has a piercing on her frenulum, which is the tissue that connects the upper lips to the gums. During an interview with TMJ4 News, she confirmed how the piercing came about.

“I pierced it a little over two years ago now,” she proudly shared in January 2026. “Also, I did it myself.”

The amateur procedure involved Alyssa’s sister holding her lip in place while the skater herself “was looking in the mirror.”

“I had my piercing needle and then — yeah, I just put it through,” she added.
