Which 'Yellowstone' Character Won't Appear in Kayce's 'Marshals' Spinoff?

Luke Grimesspinoff show Marshals will have some familiar faces from Yellowstone — but there is one main cast member who isn’t making an appearance yet.

Creator Spencer Hudnut spoke with TV Insider on Tuesday, February 17, which is when he confirmed that Kayce’s (Grimes) sister Beth (Kelly Reilly) isn’t going to be in season 1 amid her own spinoff, Dutton Ranch.

“We’ll definitely hear about the Duttons a fair amount,” Hudnut teased, adding that an appearance from Reilly is “on the table” in the future.

Marshals, which premieres March 1, follows Kayce leaving “ranching life behind to join an elite unit” of U.S. Marshals,” according to the official synopsis. While “combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

In addition to Grimes, 42, the show stars Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, Tatanka Means, Brett Cullen and Logan Marshall Green. Kebbel, Santos and Means will play members of the U.S. Marshals while Cullen plays Harry Gifford, the head of the U.S. Marshals in Montana.

The CBS spinoff show joins creator Taylor Sheridan‘s wide-ranging TV universe, which originally became a household name due to Yellowstone. The Paramount Network series premiered on Paramount+ in 2018. It introduced Us to the fictional Dutton family, who own the largest ranch in Montana.

After finding success with the drama series, Sheridan grew the Yellowstone world with subsequent spinoffs. The Duttons, meanwhile, have faced changes with patriarch John (Kevin Costner) dying in the final season amid Costner’s alleged offscreen issues with Sheridan and the show.

Beth, meanwhile, is the focus of her own show alongside husband Rip (Hauser). Reilly, 48, previously reflected on the vision for a potential new show focused on Beth.

“I am definitely interested in Beth, and who she is after some things have happened,” she told Town and Country in November 2024. “Who is she in peace? As an actor you’re like, ‘Ooh, let me at that.’ Wouldn’t it be fun to watch Beth go to therapy?”

Reilly noted that she wouldn’t mind getting to spend more time with Beth.

“I remember reading [the script for the pilot] as I was packing up our apartment and thinking, ‘Oh, s***. It was like laying down a bit of a gauntlet. The challenge of it pepped my interest,” Reilly recalled about her subsequent phone call with Sheridan that got her the part. “I didn’t even audition. Then I was like, ‘F***, I didn’t audition.’ I was terrified, because I didn’t know how I was going to do it. And it took me a minute to find her.”

The actress acknowledged that there were ups and downs with playing a character such as Beth.

“I love gearing up to play her, because there’s an adrenaline to Beth and it’s very energizing. But it’s also incredibly gnarly,” she noted. “I have to hide all of me away to put some of that on. I love her, but I can’t live with her.”

Reilly has loved getting the opportunity to play a complicated woman, saying, “It’s not just about playing strong, capable women. That’s missing the point. Male characters can be messy, but they can still be heroic. Full spectrum. And I think there is a bravery to embracing shadow. How can you be an honest person if you don’t own some of your darkness?”

Marshals premieres on CBS March 1 and will air Sundays at 8 p.m. ET.
