Hilary Duff confirmed that at least some of the music on her upcoming album is about her family after fans speculated that one song in particular is about her sister, Haylie Duff.
Hilary, 38, opened up about her new album, Luck ⌠Or Something, in a cover interview with Glamour published Tuesday, February 17. The Younger alum explained that she chose to write about her family at this point in her career because she felt it was important to be as real as possible in her music.
âThatâs my family. Those are the people that affect you the most, take up the most space naturally as a human whoâs born into something,â she explained. âJust because youâre born into a family doesnât mean that it always stays together. You can only control your side and your street.â
Seemingly addressing âThe Optimist,â a song that mentions her dad, Hilary added, âIâve had a very complicated life, and my parents had a very complicated thing. I know itâs not rare, and I think it goes back to the theme of, âWhy share now?â I guess I just felt ready.â
Hilary Duff Appears to Address Sister Haylie on New Song 'We Don't Talk'
Hilaryâs comments come after fans speculated that one of her new songs, âWe Donât Talk,â is about her rumored estrangement from Haylie, 40. She performed the track last month during her Small Rooms, Big Nerves tour ahead of the release of Luck ⌠Or Something, which drops Friday, February 20.
âDonât know when it happened / Not even sure what it was about,â Hilary sings on âWe Donât Talk,â alluding to a fractured relationship. ââCause we come from the same home, same blood.â

She then begins the chorus, where she repeats the lines, âWe donât talk, we donât talk about it / We donât talk about anything anymore.â
During the second verse, Hilary hints at a rivalry between her and the subject of the track, singing, âAnd if itâs âcause youâre jealous / God knows I would sell it all, then break you off the bigger half.â
Hilary Duff Reveals New Song Is About âBrief Experienceâ With An Ex
Later, Hilary sings, âLetâs have it out / Iâll hear you out, youâll hear me out on the couch / Get back to how we were as kids / Letâs break it down / So sick of being so sad about / How we donât talk and you wonât talk about it.â
Hilary hasnât directly addressed what or who the song is about, but fans immediately theorized that the lyrics are about her sister, with whom Hilary hasnât been pictured publicly since 2019.
âWOWW⌠Hilary Duff just sung We donât talk and itâs 100% about Hailey. đ but not mean at all. Basically telling her to reach out,â one person wrote via X last month.
Another new song, âMature,â is seemingly about a past relationship with an older man, which Hilary confirmed in her Glamour interview. She noted, however, that fans might not be right about who they think the song is about.
Hilary Duff Sings About 'Touching Myself' in Racy New Breakup Song
âItâs definitely about a relationship that I had. It was very brief with someone older than me, and that was not illegal, but inappropriate when you have this much time removed from it,â she explained. âEverybody speculates, but Iâm not sure they got it right. ⌠I think that itâs super nuanced and itâs hard to defend certain things that have happened in my life. But the one thing that Iâll say is, working as an adult since I was 10 years old, itâs very hard to have relationships with people your own age.â
Hilary, who has been married to Matthew Koma since 2019, previously dated Good Charlotteâs Joel Madden from 2004 to 2006. When their relationship began, she was 16 and he was 25.
Hilary further clarified to Glamour that she doesnât plan to reveal what or who âMatureâ is about, saying, âIf I wanted to say who, I would.â
Madden, for his part, showed his support for the track after its November 2025 release by resharing wife Nicole Richieâs Instagram post about it.
ââMatureâ is not the word I would use to describe us,â wrote Richie, 44, tagging Hilary. âBut regardless, this song is a BOP.â
